{"id":68512,"date":"2026-04-15T18:57:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T18:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/68512\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T18:57:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T18:57:12","slug":"nobody-should-control-the-strait-of-hormuz-uae-minister-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/68512\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobody should control the Strait of Hormuz, UAE minister says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Strait of Hormuz should not be under anyone\u2019s control, and reopening it as a free and open waterway is the UAE\u2019s top priority in any security agreement between Iran and the US, a UAE official said on Wednesday<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The emirates will also not accept an agreement that \u201cdoes not actually put a clear and final conclusion to [Iranian] missile and drone technology,\u201d Reem Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, said at Semafor World Economy<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">She added that Iran\u2019s naval and uranium enrichment capabilities need to be addressed as well, reiterating the UAE\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cNobody should control the Strait of Hormuz. That\u2019s the whole point. International passageways are a public good,\u201d Al Hashimy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The UAE dealt with a barrage of some 1,800 missiles and drones from the time the US-Israel war on Iran began on Feb. 28, and the Strait of Hormuz remains choked off..<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Al Hashimy noted that nearly a third of global fertilizer exports and a quarter of its oil and gas come from Gulf countries, with much of it relying on the strait for passage to international markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhat is far more important to us right now is highlighting that this is not a regional issue, that the Strait of Hormuz and the continuous weaponization of that strait is impacting everybody you know,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to feel that impact if you haven\u2019t already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Economic ripple effects from the war are raising the risk of global recession, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/imf-slashes-growth-forecast-middle-east-gulf-exporters-reel-impact-war-2026-04-14\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the sharpest slowdown;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;the sharpest slowdown&quot;}\" class=\"link \">the sharpest slowdown<\/a> will be felt by Gulf economies, according to the International Monetary Fund\u2019s 2026 forecast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Al Hashimy said the war has also revealed \u201cfault lines\u201d in the strength of the Gulf bloc of nations, which includes Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, and the UAE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt has been an eye-opener for us to realize not just different capabilities across the Gulf, but also different orientations across the Gulf,\u201d she said, without providing specific examples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Prior to the war, the UAE and Saudi Arabia had been in a diplomatic rift as the Gulf\u2019s two largest economies were openly at odds after the collapse of their coalition in Yemen.
