{"id":70045,"date":"2026-04-17T11:44:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T11:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/70045\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T11:44:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T11:44:09","slug":"lebanon-israel-talks-must-be-given-a-chance-chatham-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/70045\/","title":{"rendered":"Lebanon\u2013Israel talks must be given a chance | Chatham House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lebanon\u2013Israel talks must be given a chance<\/p>\n<p>EXPERT COMMENT<\/p>\n<p>Rare direct talks are unlikely to succeed in the long-term without Hezbollah disarming, but they are a welcome opportunity for the Lebanese state to regain its authority in foreign policy and pursue confidence-building measures with Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The US hosted direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington this week against the backdrop of Israel\u2019s ongoing strikes targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>The Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the US, along with the US ambassador to Lebanon, met in Washington on Tuesday. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio chaired the meeting, which he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp8ddydl18vo\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Opens in new window\">hailed\u00a0as<\/a>\u00a0a \u2018historic gathering that we hope to build on.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The State Department\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2026\/04\/meeting-between-the-governments-of-the-united-states-lebanon-and-israel\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Opens in new window\">said\u00a0that<\/a>\u00a0both sides agreed to \u2018launch direct negotiations at a mutually agreed time and venue.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>While significant hurdles remain, most notably the issue of Hezbollah\u2019s disarmament, these talks should be welcomed as an important initial confidence-building measure that lays the ground for much-needed future negotiations.
