DIXMONT, Maine (WABI) – President Donald Trump says negotiations are set to continue with Iran this weekend as Iranian officials announce they will open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial traffic. <\/p>\n
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said Friday\u2019s announcement gives her hope that the second round of negotiations will go better than the first. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have seen the Strait of Hormuz reopen today, which is a good sign, and the Iranians have seen most of their navy decimated by our troops, so I think there\u2019s more incentive now for the Iranians to enter into good faith negotiations,\u201d said Collins.<\/p>\n
Collins also addressed her votes against the War Powers Act resolutions in the Senate.<\/p>\n
She says there are two red lines for her, one being any use of ground troops in the conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe second is the 60-day deadline that is in the War Powers Act, and at this point, based on what I know and have seen, I would not support authorizing military hostilities beyond that 60-day point or if ground troops are deployed, except in extraordinary circumstances,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Collins also said it\u2019s \u2018inexcusable\u2019 that the partial government shutdown is affecting the Department of Homeland Security. She said she is worried that this makes the U.S. vulnerable to cyber attacks.<\/p>\n
