We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Tankers in the Gulf <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/middle-east\/iran-us-war-live-trump-strait-hormuz-israel-lebanon-ceasefire-b2960246.html#post-2356341\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">came under fire on Saturday as Iran reimposed its blockade <\/a>of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/strait-of-hormuz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, just hours after declaring the vital waterway had reopened to commercial traffic.<\/p>\n<p>At least two vessels reported being struck by gunfire as they tried to cross the strait, after Tehran said it would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/uk-fuel-prices-petrol-diesel-today-iran-war-b2960240.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shutting the strategic chokepoint in response to the continued US blockade <\/a>on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n<p>Hopes for diplomacy were dashed as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a>\u2019s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said the nation\u2019s navy was ready to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tv\/news\/iran-war-trump-khamenei-supreme-leader-video-b2960333.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflict \u201cnew bitter defeats\u201d on its enemies<\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a>-Iranian ceasefire set to expire within days.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s foreign ministry cast fresh doubt on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s hopes for a second round of peace talks this weekend, revealing no date has been set and adding that a framework of understanding must be agreed first.<\/p>\n<p>President Trump, who only yesterday said Iran had agreed never to close the strait again, played down the situation, telling reporters Iran had \u201cgot a little cute\u201d, but that the US was still in talks and would not be \u201cblackmailed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hormuz-apaches.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"AH-64 Apaches fly above the Strait of Hormuz during a patrol, 17 April\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>AH-64 Apaches fly above the Strait of Hormuz during a patrol, 17 April (US Centcom)<\/p>\n<p>Maritime trackers had earlier shown eight tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz in the first major movement of ships since the conflict erupted seven weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>But Iran\u2019s armed forces soon said it was resuming control of the strait, accusing the US of violating the ceasefire agreement with the blockade east of the strait. Both sides accused each other of \u201cpiracy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic came to an abrupt halt as the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said a tanker had been fired at by \u201ctwo gunboats linked to Iran\u2019s [Revolutionary Guards]\u201d off Oman.<\/p>\n<p>The captain \u200cof the tanker said \u2060the two gunboats opened fire without issuing a radio challenge, UKMTO said, adding \u200bthat the \u200cvessel and \u2060its crew \u2060were reported safe.<\/p>\n<p>Iran had reopened the strategic chokepoint on Friday, following the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire in the parallel conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. <\/p>\n<p>It said the reopening was conditional on the US ending its blockade, while Trump said the US military would keep its ships in place until \u201cour transaction with Iran is 100 per cent complete\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/2271915918.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"President Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office as he signs an Executive Order on 18 April\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>President Donald Trump speaks in the Oval Office as he signs an Executive Order on 18 April (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>As uncertainty weighed on the delicate two-week truce between Iran and the US, set to expire on Tuesday, Iran\u2019s supreme national security council said it was considering new peace proposals from the US.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said Iran is yet to respond to the new terms, which came about from mediation by Pakistan in recent days.
