A new sculpture has been installed at the site. Here’s what all that means

The world was potentially counting down the hours to the scheduled end of the pause in fighting when Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, beginning the wait again.

Mr Trump said due to the “fractured” government of Iran, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir had asked him to “hold” attacks on Iran until “their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal”.

“I have therefore directed our military to continue the blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other,” Mr Trump said.

Earlier, before making this announcement, Mr Trump had said he did not want to extend the fragile truce, saying “I expect to be bombing” Iran the moment the pause in hostilities lapsed.

“We’re ready to go … the military is raring to go,” he told CNBC in an interview that aired just hours before his Truth Social post.

His vice-president, JD Vance, who was due to lead the US delegation at talks in Islamabad, had also put his trip to Pakistan on hold.

It’s not clear when the ceasefire now extends until. But nor was it clear precisely when it had been due to expire. Confused? Let me try to explain the differences, and why it’s part of the pressure being put on Iran to show its hand.

Mr Trump announced the two-week ceasefire in the very early hours of the morning on April 8, less than two hours before the deadline he had set for Iran to agree or face the obliteration of power plants and bridges across the country.

Roughly calculating the fortnight from the hour of Trump’s announcement seems to be the timing the Pakistani information minister was working to when he posted on X that the deadline was 4:50am on Wednesday in Pakistan — just before 10am Wednesday AEST. But — and it’s a very significant but — that directly contradicted what Mr Trump said in an interview with Bloomberg on Monday — that the truce wouldn’t have lapsed until Wednesday morning in Washington DC, which is Thursday morning AEST.

That may have been an example of the president freelancing, with some US news outlets reporting frustration in the White House about how he’s seemingly running these negotiations through social media posts and bite-sized interviews with a range of news outlets.

An adviser to Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, said ‌in a post on ‌X that this was all a “ploy to buy time” for a surprise strike, and that the continuation of the ‌US blockade on ‌Iranian ports was “no different from bombardment and must be met with a military response”.

So aside from fuelling anxiety across the Middle East, why does the confusion matter? Well, it’s about trying to literally bring the two sides to the negotiating table.

For all of the rhetoric coming from Tehran that it is ready for a return to war, and the chest beating from the US that its military is sitting and waiting for orders from the commander-in-chief to open fire, there had been a sense the two big players here want some sort of deal.

That’s despite there being three main sticking points in negotiations: the fate of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles, the future of Iran’s uranium enrichment program, and the control of the Strait of Hormuz.

The US and Iran couch their public statements in terms of what the other side will or won’t do, and is or isn’t doing, followed up by threats and counter-threats regarding how it is planning to react. There’s only one player talking about the job not being done here — and that’s Israel, the junior partner to the United States in this war.

For the moment, vague statements about when the fighting may or may not restart put the pressure on the Iranian regime to put its top officials on a plane from Tehran to Islamabad, rather than tempt fate. But Iran is also insisting it won’t take part in the talks while the US continues its blockade of Iranian ships and ports, and highlighting the inconsistencies in American public statements.

It’s a high-stakes game of bluff that the world is watching it in real time often playing out on social media.

And here’s the impact on AustraliaCosts out of control: How every part of Australia’s construction industry is feeling the pain of interruptions to global shipping from this war.
