The Kabul Tribune (KT) \u2014 The United States has increased
\npressure on Iraq to distance itself from Iran and rein in Iran-backed militias,
\nsuspending parts of its security cooperation with Baghdad, The New York Times
\nreported.<\/p>\n
Washington has called on the Iraqi government to dismantle
\nmilitia groups linked to Iran that have recently carried out attacks on U.S.
\npersonnel and facilities in Iraq.<\/p>\n
A U.S. State Department official said Washington \u201cwill not
\ntolerate attacks on U.S. interests\u201d and expects Baghdad to take immediate
\naction against such groups.<\/p>\n
According to Iraqi officials, the suspension includes joint
\ncounterterrorism operations, training programs and logistical support for Iraqi
\nsecurity forces.<\/p>\n
The move comes as Iraq faces growing pressure to balance its
\nties with both Washington and Tehran, particularly amid heightened regional
\ntensions.<\/p>\n
Recent attacks have targeted U.S. diplomatic and military
\nsites, including areas near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Iran-backed militias
\nhave claimed responsibility for some of the incidents.<\/p>\n
The United States has also warned its citizens against
\ntraveling to Iraq and suspended consular services, citing security concerns.<\/p>\n
Analysts say the situation underscores Iraq\u2019s fragile
\npolitical landscape, where powerful militia groups remain deeply embedded in
\nthe country\u2019s military and political structures, complicating efforts to curb
\ntheir influence.<\/p>\n
