An Iraqi lawmaker from the Sadiqoon bloc, the
\npolitical wing of US-sanctioned Asaib Ahl al-Haq, on Wednesday accused the
\nUnited States of pressuring Iraq by obstructing dollar transfers, warning the
\nmove could disrupt salary payments for public employees and retirees.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Shafaq News, MP Habib al-Halawi argued
\nthat Washington has exerted \u201cdirect and indirect pressure\u201d on successive Iraqi
\ngovernments since 2003 without achieving its objectives. He linked the alleged
\nmeasure to ongoing political negotiations, suggesting it is intended to
\ninfluence the Shiite Coordination Framework, the largest parliamentary bloc
\nwith about 162 seats, of which Asaib Ahl al-Haq is a member, in selecting the
\nnext prime minister.<\/p>\n
Parliament, al-Halawi added, is preparing legislation
\nto safeguard sovereignty, with legal advisers drafting measures to counter
\nforeign interference.<\/p>\n
Earlier today, the Wall Street Journal reported<\/a> that
\nthe United States blocked the transfer of roughly $500 million in Iraqi oil
\nrevenues to Baghdad, pointing to US dissatisfaction over Iraq\u2019s \u201cslow progress\u201d
\nin curbing Iran-aligned armed factions.<\/p>\n
