Leaders of Iraq\u2019s
\nShiite Coordination Framework (CF), the largest bloc in parliament, are set to
\nmeet on Wednesday to resolve the mechanism for selecting a prime ministerial
\nnominee, an Iraqi lawmaker told Shafaq News.<\/p>\n
MP Amer Al-Fayez,
\nhead of the Tasmeem Alliance within the CF, said that the discussions will
\nfocus on reaching a compromise formula that reconciles the two main approaches
\nfor selecting the candidate. <\/p>\n
No candidate has
\nwithdrawn so far, Al-Fayez added, noting that if agreement on a mechanism is
\nnot reached, contenders may be put forward individually for a vote within the
\nFramework, including a compromise option. \u201cIf consensus proves difficult, the
\nmeeting could be postponed.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Framework, with Under Iraq\u2019s
\nabout 162 of parliament\u2019s 329 seats, has failed<\/a> to agree on a nominee in two
\nprevious meetings held on Saturday and Monday, postponing the decision to
\ntoday.<\/p>\n
\npost-2003 power-sharing system, the presidency is held by a Kurd, the
\npremiership by a Shiite, and the speakership by a Sunni Arab. Parliament
\nelected Nizar Amedi as president on April 11, initiating the process to
\nnominate a prime minister. The CF has 15 days to present its candidate, after
\nwhich the nominee has 30 days to form a government and secure parliamentary
\nconfidence under Article 76 of the constitution.<\/p>\n
