The ABC has been told the women are Zeinab Ahmed, Kawsar Abbas, Zahra Ahmed, and Janai Safar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Syrian interior forces came to Al Roj to pick them up directly and take them to Damascus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;We can confirm that today that the coordination was perfect,\u201d Al Roj camp director Hakmiyeh Ibrahim told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It was done between us and the Syrian government, to be able to fly back these families to their country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">She said there were currently no plans for the remaining Australians to leave Al Roj.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;Right now, we are in contact with a number of countries &#8211; we hope that in the near future, more releases will be done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In February, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-16\/australian-families-with-isis-links-leave-camp-in-syria\/106351298\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106351298\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ABC revealed a group of 11 women and 23 children had tried to leave the notorious Al Roj camp<\/a> in Kurdish-controlled north-eastern Syria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They were forced to turn around soon after beginning the more than 10-hour journey by road to the Syrian capital, Damascus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">At the time, it had been described as an administrative issue, with the families not properly coordinating their travel with Syrian government forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Their supporters, including <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-25\/sydney-doctor-helping-australian-isis-families-in-syria\/106385212\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106385212\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prominent Sydney doctor Jamal Rifi, said a tip-off to the media had thwarted their chances<\/a> of quietly leaving the camp to begin their journey home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It had been expected that the families would bide their time before making another attempt to leave Al Roj.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.syriahr.com\/%d8%aa%d9%85%d9%87%d9%8a%d8%af%d8%a7%d9%8b-%d9%84%d8%aa%d8%b1%d8%ad%d9%8a%d9%84%d9%87%d9%85-%d8%aa%d8%ac%d9%87%d9%8a%d8%b2%d8%a7%d8%aa-%d9%84%d9%86%d9%82%d9%84-4-%d8%b9%d9%88%d8%a7%d8%a6%d9%84\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Thursday<\/a> that 17 members of the group, from four families, were preparing to leave the squalid camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It is understood the families will try to begin their journey back to Australia from Damascus.<\/p>\n<p>Latest attempt comes months after political furore<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The case sparked <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-26\/children-isis-brides-politics-anthony-albanese-coalition-greens\/106382326\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106382326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a political furore in Australia in February<\/a>, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese saying he had no sympathy for their plight and <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-17\/anthony-albanese-on-isis-families-trying-to-leave-syria\/106352492\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106352492\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">insisting the Australian government was not helping them leave Al Roj<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Despite that insistence, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said Australia was under a legal obligation to provide the group with passports, given they are citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Members of the group had single-use travel documents in hand ahead of their failed February journey, with Dr Rifi saying he had brought them to Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Australian officials had visited Al Roj in 2022, beginning the process of identity checks. It is likely that this was what allowed passports to be issued by the Australian government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Soon after the case was thrust back into the spotlight this year, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-18\/australia-issues-teo-against-isis-linked-citizen-in-syria-camp\/106360092\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106360092\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the women was issued with a Temporary Exclusion Order (TEO)<\/a> barring her from travelling to Australia for a period of two years on national security grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The federal opposition proposed <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-22\/calls-to-criminalise-assistance-to-isis-linked-australians\/106373812\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106373812\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new criminal offences for anyone trying to help the women and children<\/a>, or anyone else with links to the failed Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p>Escape comes amid power shifts in Syria<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">In February, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-20\/eleven-australian-isis-brides-trying-to-leave-syria-named\/106362024\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106362024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the ABC revealed the identities of the women in the camp<\/a> after seeing a handwritten list of their names.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Many of the women had previously spoken to the ABC, including as far back as 2019 when <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-04-15\/grandmother-reunited-with-sharrouf-children-in-syria\/10996562\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/10996562\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Four Corners gained access to north-eastern Syria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-20\/eleven-australian-isis-brides-trying-to-leave-syria-named\/106362024\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Revealed: Full list of &#8216;ISIS brides&#8217; trying to leave Syria<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The ABC can reveal the names of the 11 women connected to former Islamic State fighters in Syria who attempted to journey home to Australia in February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Some of the women are believed to have accompanied their husbands to Syria at the height of Islamic State&#8217;s deadly rampage through Iraq and Syria, while others likely travelled to the area with family and married IS fighters after their arrival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">A number of the women claim they were lured to Syria under false pretences.
