Iraq\u2019s Shiite Coordination Framework on Monday
\nnominated Ali Al-Zaidi as its candidate for premiership, praising the \u201cresponsible\u201d withdrawal of State of Law leader Nouri
\nAl-Maliki and caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani from the
\nrace.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the bloc, which holds about 162 of
\nparliament\u2019s 329 seats, indicated that its leaders convened at the government
\npalace in Baghdad and selected Al-Zaidi as their nominee in its capacity as the
\nlargest parliamentary bloc.<\/p>\n

Earlier today, political sources told<\/a> Shafaq News that
\nAl-Maliki and Al-Sudani,\u00a0who heads the
\nReconstruction and Development (Al-Ima’ar wal-Tanmiya) Coalition, had agreed to support Al-Zaidi as a compromise figure
\nto lead the next government.<\/p>\n

Under Iraq\u2019s post-2003 power-sharing system, the
\npresidency is held by a Kurd, the premiership by a Shiite, and the speakership
\nby a Sunni Arab. The Framework missed the April 26 constitutional deadline to
\nnominate a candidate following the election of Nizar Amedi as president on
\nApril 11; once designated, the nominee has 30 days to form a government and
\nsecure parliamentary confidence under Article 76.<\/p>\n
