An arms race could be catastrophic. | Opinion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I enlisted in the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.georgewbushlibrary.gov\/research\/topic-guides\/global-war-terror\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Global War on Terror;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Global War on Terror<\/a> believing we would do things differently than we had in Vietnam \u2013 make the world safer, defeat Islamic terrorism and avoid another quagmire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Instead, I watched Iraq\u00a0turn into a disaster\u00a0and Afghanistan become the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2019\/investigations\/afghanistan-papers\/afghanistan-war-confidential-documents\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:longest war;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">longest war<\/a> in U.S. history,\u00a0<a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.warcosts.org\/cost-of-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:costing trillions;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">costing trillions<\/a>\u00a0of dollars\u00a0with no clear path to victory. We <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2019\/investigations\/afghanistan-papers\/afghanistan-war-confidential-documents\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:measured progress;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">measured progress<\/a> in kill counts and destroyed assets, but lost sight of the mission. Or maybe the mission changed. Maybe the goal wasn&#8217;t to win, but to sustain the fight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Either way, the question is unavoidable: Are we safer now?<\/p>\n<p>The US is sliding back into open-ended conflict<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;War is a racket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Today,\u00a0that line\u00a0sounds like something from a progressive activist or a cynical fiscal hawk. It wasn&#8217;t. It came from a <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/our-collections\/photography\/us-people\/b\/butler-smedley-d.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:two-time Medal of Honor recipient;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">two-time Medal of Honor recipient<\/a>. <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage-history.com\/site\/hclass\/secret_societies\/ebooks\/pdf\/butler_racket.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler warned;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler warned<\/a> nearly a century ago about how war had become a business \u2013 how military power and private profit had fused at the country&#8217;s expense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His point was simple: When war becomes good business, defense stops being the point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A century later, the racket endures. After years of promises of &#8220;<a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/03\/03\/nx-s1-5733999\/trump-promised-the-maga-base-no-new-wars-then-he-went-to-war-with-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:no new wars;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">no new wars<\/a>,&#8221; the United States is once again sliding into an open-ended conflict in Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Which raises the question: Is this level of military spending actually making us safer? Butler would recognize it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As a Marine, I lived in dilapidated barracks with undrinkable water while billions flowed to defense contractors for weapons and gear. Armored vehicles, tactical equipment, new rifles \u2013 purchased in bulk for wars that felt less about winning than sustaining themselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After Osama bin Laden\u00a0<a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/osama-bin-laden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:was killed in 2011;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">was killed in 2011<\/a>, we had a clear off-ramp in Afghanistan. We didn&#8217;t take it. There are real adversaries, and some want to harm the United States. The question isn&#8217;t whether we need a strong military. It&#8217;s whether the current level of spending, with no accountability attached, is actually making us safer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">History offers a warning.
