{"id":89232,"date":"2026-04-29T12:40:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T12:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/89232\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T12:40:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T12:40:29","slug":"iraqs-dominant-parliamentary-bloc-nominates-businessman-ali-al-zaidi-as-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/89232\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq&#8217;s dominant parliamentary bloc nominates businessman Ali al-Zaidi as prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BAGHDAD (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iraq\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iraq\u2019s<\/a> dominant parliamentary bloc on Monday nominated Ali al-Zaidi, a businessman and political newcomer, to be the country\u2019s prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement by the Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite parties allied with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran<\/a>, followed a meeting at the government palace. It came after weeks of internal debate among its member parties aimed at selecting a compromise candidate to lead the next government.<\/p>\n<p>President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/iraq-elects-kurdish-politician-nizar-amidi-as-president-amid-war-fallout-8c2f0814113441829b8ceab271192969\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nizar Amidi<\/a> then tasked al-Zaidi with forming a government. Even with the backing of the dominant bloc, the new government is not assured of receiving the required number of votes.<\/p>\n<p>The coalition had previously said it would back former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who the U.S. administration views as too close to Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump publicly announced his opposition to al-Maliki and threatened to cut off aid to Iraq if he was appointed.<\/p>\n<p>While <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iraq-prime-minister-maliki-trump-1c558500a121b2ecb3e8ca5ac7a1cece\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">al-Maliki remained defiant<\/a> after Trump\u2019s intervention, the bloc decided to shift to a compromise candidate.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement announcing al-Zaidi\u2019s nomination, the Coordination Framework thanked al-Maliki and incumbent Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/supporters-of-iraqi-prime-minister-celebrate-his-election-win-in-baghdad-a3eb7037c0ec4460b6adad075e72f296\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mohammed Shia al-Sudani<\/a> for their \u201chistoric and responsible positions\u201d in withdrawing their candidacies to help overcome the political deadlock. Al-Sudani issued a statement congratulating al-Zaidi.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Zaidi, who is chairman of Al-Janoob Islamic Bank, emerged in the final stages of discussions as one of the leading candidates, bolstered by his economic background and business and investment connections.
