Located between<br \/>\nnortheastern Maysan and southeastern Basra, Hawizeh Marsh had been reduced to a<br \/>\nshallow wetland. By 2025, its surface area had fallen to less than 600 square<br \/>\nkm, while water depths in many areas dropped to around half a meter.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1777496895116.webp\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rainfall that began in autumn 2025 and continued through<br \/>\nApril 2026 \u2014the longest wet season in at least four decades\u2014 has restored large<br \/>\nsections of the marsh, with reeds and papyrus re-emerging across newly flooded<br \/>\nareas. Bird populations have returned to nesting sites, while fishing activity<br \/>\nhas resumed in some sections. Livestock herding has also restarted in areas<br \/>\nwhere grazing has become available again.
