{"id":92104,"date":"2026-05-01T02:38:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/92104\/"},"modified":"2026-05-01T02:38:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:38:09","slug":"rain-revives-iraqs-hawizeh-marshes-after-years-of-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/92104\/","title":{"rendered":"Rain revives Iraq&#8217;s Hawizeh Marshes after years of drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-WUG7ZJEYFJHDVBM6A5UHATYK2U\">Parts of the drought-affected Hawizeh Marshes in south-eastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=iraq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/search\/?query=iraq\">Iraq<\/a> have come back to life after winter rain replenished water levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-EQ7E7VO6ZBCU3BLNFP7VFG656A\">A downpour in March, followed by several spells in April, brought 70mm of rain, flooding parts of the marshes known for their wildlife and water buffalo population, and sometimes linked to the biblical Garden of Eden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-QGLCLNHTCJCA5H3RRMISBLBEAQ\">Wooden boats can now glide across the pristine waters, reviving the hope that animal life could return, at least temporarily. From the air, the landscape looks like a sheet of hammered silver, broken only by islands of reeds and the thin, dark lines of mashoof boats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-Y5XKC3VJ3VBY7CIKIEU7ZEP44U\">The main water source for the marshes is rain and inflows from the Euphrates and Tigris. But dams built in Turkey and Syria block the influx from both rivers to southern Iraq. Climate change has also reduced rainfall, with annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/05\/25\/iraq-water-reserves-lowest-in-80-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/05\/25\/iraq-water-reserves-lowest-in-80-years\/\">droughts<\/a> in parts of Iraq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-2ENX33NZOREA5JKTBYYJHVPVIM\">In Iran, dams on the Karkheh River have also reduced a key supply feeding the Hawizeh Marshes, part of which lie in Iranian territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-5N6DSCGFERCN5OC66JOCM7B5QQ\">For Hashim Mahdi Lazim, 36, the return of the water means a home reclaimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-REIE2SZ2UBGWZM7ABWJYL6RFB4\">Over the past years, when the marshes around his home in the Abu Khasaf area dried to dust, Mr Lazim was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/mena\/iraq\/2023\/11\/17\/from-lush-fields-to-concrete-iraqs-marsh-dwellers-forced-to-adapt-to-city-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/mena\/iraq\/2023\/11\/17\/from-lush-fields-to-concrete-iraqs-marsh-dwellers-forced-to-adapt-to-city-life\/\">forced to move<\/a> his nine-member family to the small town of Kahlaa in Maysan province.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-NDTK3RYTF5B7VMGD4HFQIZQYEQ\">\u201cThey were tough and cruel years,\u201d he told The National. \u201cAll the families suffered. We lost our life, which is based on water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-KXZ5O3DKU5DA5OFBPTJGHTMGPQ\">Now, the family is back \u2013 buying buffalo, fishing and rebuilding. \u201cAll the people are happy here. The buffalo, the fish, the reeds and the birds are back, as are the tourists,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-YUPTVUCDUBBNTCMICLCWKV3RUY\">Nothing is guaranteed. The marshes have been declared dead before, only to revive when winter rains and water releases from dams upstream coincide. Extreme <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/11\/iraq-hit-by-power-cuts-as-temperatures-soar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/08\/11\/iraq-hit-by-power-cuts-as-temperatures-soar\/\">summer temperatures<\/a>, often exceeding 50\u00b0C, accelerate evaporation and cause the wetlands to dry out entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-COBILMHGMBFTHERQJ75HKCGISI\">The Iraqi government has described the latest floods as a \u201crelative revival\u201d for the land, with enough water to keep the marshes wet until after the summer season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-JTXB6Q27XZGOFAL3ZGBNTBYCB4\">Around \u201c85 per cent of the Hawizeh wetlands are now submerged after recent rains, although water levels remain shallow\u201d, environmental activist Ahmed Saleh Neema told AFP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-3TLBICSVDVCZZEJ2W3CQJ2V3UA\">More rain is needed to maintain continuous inundation of the marshes, where visitors and residents travel by wooden boats and observe a way of life dating back more than 5,000 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-BWPDTJSRWRGLTP7AYNY4FWP7II\">Although authorities have assured residents that sufficient water will continue to flow and that measures will be taken to keep the marshes inundated for as long as possible, Mr Lazim&#8217;s family has not given up their home in town. They fear the area could dry up again in a few weeks, as has happened every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-3IQOIHRHBREA5IP6LRBJO4EGUA\">But for now, the horizons for its inhabitants are wide and blue once again. &#8220;We know it can go,\u201d Mr Lazim said. \u201cBut today, we live.
