Just hours before a crucial deadline, the Trump administration<\/a> has argued the war in Iran<\/a> has been effectively \u201cterminated\u201d under the ongoing ceasefire.<\/p>\n

Under the War Powers Resolution, President Donald Trump<\/a> faced a 60-day clock \u2014 set to expire Friday \u2014 to either end the war in Iran or secure congressional approval to continue<\/a>. Now, a senior administration official tells the Associated Press<\/a> the U.S. and Iran haven\u2019t exchanged fire since April 7, and that the hostilities have been \u201cterminated.\u201d<\/p>\n

A U.S. official also told Reuters<\/a>: “For War Powers Resolution purposes, the hostilities that began on Saturday, February \u200b28, have terminated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier Thursday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth argued the 60-day clock was paused under the ceasefire.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a ceasefire right now, which our understanding means the 60-day clock pauses or stops in a ceasefire,\u201d he said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not believe the statute would support that,\u201d Democratic Senator Tim Kaine replied. \u201cI think the 60 days runs maybe tomorrow, and it\u2019s going to pose a really important legal question for the administration there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate Democrats also tried \u2014 and failed \u2014 for a sixth time to end the Iran war by forcing a War Powers Resolution vote Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter two months of war, 13 service members\u2019 lives lost, and billions of dollars squandered, it is time we recognized that the price we have paid is already too high. We must say no to this unauthorized war of choice,\u201d Democratic Senator Adam Schiff said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Republican Senators Susan Collins and Rand Paul joined nearly every Democrat in supporting the measure.<\/p>\n

Trump said Thursday the U.S. \u2018already won\u2019 the war in Iran, while Hegseth argued the 60-day clock was paused under the ceasefire (AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Constitution gives Congress an essential role in decisions of war and peace, and the War Powers Act establishes a clear 60-day deadline for Congress to either authorize or end U.S. involvement in foreign hostilities,\u201d Collins said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThat deadline is not a suggestion; it is a requirement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, many Republicans continue to defend Trump\u2019s war with Iran. The president has \u201cthe right to use the military to defend the freedom of this country,\u201d Republican Senator Rick Scott told CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins<\/a> Thursday night.<\/p>\n

When pressed about the cost of the war, Scott replied: “How do you put a price tag on limiting somebody\u2019s ability to kill you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The president has also claimed the U.S. \u201calready won\u201d the war with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve already won, but I want to win by a bigger margin,\u201d Trump told Newsmax\u2019s Greta Van Susteren <\/a>Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we have. We have destroyed their navy, destroyed their air force, destroyed all of their \u2014 if you look at their anti-aircraft equipment, their radar equipment, their leadership, their leadership is destroyed,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
