<\/p>\nIsraeli police have released video showing what eyewitnesses said was an attack by a Jewish man on a nun near Jerusalem’s Old City.<\/p>\n
Footage showed a man following the nun, pushing her to the ground, briefly walking away and then returning to beat her as she lay on the ground, before bystanders intervened.<\/p>\n
The attack took place near David’s Tomb \u2014 a holy site outside Zion’s Gate on the southern side of the Old City \u2014 on Tuesday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The date when the video was recorded was verified by an official statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which said that the attack occurred on April 28.<\/p>\n
The Ministry’s statement on X said: “This shameful act stands in direct contradiction to the values of respect, coexistence, and religious freedom upon which Israel is founded and to which it remains deeply committed.”<\/p>\n

Olivier Poquillon, the director of the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, said the nun was a researcher at the school.<\/p>\n
He called the attack an “act of sectarian violence” in a post on X.<\/p>\n
Attacks on Christian communities in East Jerusalem and Israel have been on the rise in recent years according to the Rossing Center for Education and Dialogue, which tracks such incidents.<\/p>\n
Police said the suspect, a 36-year-old man, was later arrested.<\/p>\n
In a statement on X Israel Police said: “In a city sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, we remain committed to protecting all communities and ensuring those responsible for violence are held accountable.”<\/p>\n
Israel also drew international criticism recently after a soldier photographed himself having bludgeoned a fallen statue of Jesus on the cross with what appeared to be an axe in southern Lebanon.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Israeli leaders later disavowed the incident and said he would be reprimanded.<\/p>\n
