{"id":94494,"date":"2026-05-02T17:11:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T17:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/94494\/"},"modified":"2026-05-02T17:11:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T17:11:17","slug":"syrian-ministry-condemns-killing-of-shia-imam-near-damascus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/94494\/","title":{"rendered":"Syrian ministry condemns killing of Shia imam near Damascus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n      The Sayyida Zeinab shrine is considered one of the most important religious sites for the Shia community[Getty]<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom:11px\">Syria\u2019s Ministry of Religious Endowments on Friday condemned the killing of a Shia Muslim preacher in an explosion near Damascus, saying the attack poses a threat to the country\u2019s stability.<\/p>\n<p>Imam Farhan Hassan al-Mansour, who served at Syria&#8217;s revered Sayyida Zeinab shrine in Damascus&#8217; southern suburbs, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AlarabyTvSY\/status\/2050229149843771565\" rel=\"nofollow\">was killed in a bomb blast<\/a> on Friday, state media reported, while it remains unclear who was behind the attack.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on Facebook, the ministry said that &#8220;such attacks constitute a direct threat to civil peace and aim to undermine Syrians\u2019 unity and destabilise the social fabric,&#8221; stressing its full rejection of such acts.<\/p>\n<p>It also reaffirmed its support for the efforts of internal security forces to pursue the perpetrators, and bring those involved to justice in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p>State television said Friday that security agencies had begun investigations and were searching for the perpetrators.<\/p>\n<p>The Shia community&#8217;s highest spiritual authority in Syria said in a statement on Facebook that Mansour was killed when &#8220;his car was targeted with an explosive device.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said the blast came after Mansour left the shrine. The group called the incident an &#8220;assassination,&#8221; without saying who was responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The shrine is believed by Shias to be the burial site of Prophet Muhammad\u2019s granddaughter and is considered one of the most important religious sites for the community.<\/p>\n<p>In July last year, influential Shia cleric Sheikh Rassul Shahud was killed in central Syria, with the highest spiritual body in the country decrying his &#8220;assassination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fears and uncertainty<\/p>\n<p>More than a year since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad\u2019s regime, Syria has witnessed frequent outbreaks of violence as the new government, under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, attempts to impose its authority.<\/p>\n<p>Some religious minorities have expressed safety concerns in the war-torn country since the new government came to power in December 2024, despite repeated reassurances by Damascus.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/investigations\/how-syrias-performative-coast-massacre-inquiry-blocks-justice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sectarian clashes in Alawite<\/a> and Druze-majority regions left thousands killed, mostly civilians.\u00a0There was also a deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/analysis\/after-damascus-church-bombing-syrian-christians-fear-future\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suicide bombing at an Orthodox church<\/a> in Damascus.<\/p>\n<p>Shias are estimated to number just 300,000 in Syria, and are mainly concentrated around Damascus as well as in Homs, Aleppo, and Idlib provinces.<\/p>\n<p>In February last year, Syrian authorities said they had arrested an alleged Islamic State group commander accused of planning a foiled attack targeting the Sayyida Zeinab shrine.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-Iran groups such as Hezbollah used to be heavily entrenched in the Sayyida Zeinab district before the overthrow of Assad\u2019s regime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/news\/its-all-over-how-iran-abandoned-assad-his-fate-days-fall\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which was backed by Tehran and its allies<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Sayyida Zeinab shrine is considered one of the most important religious sites for the Shia community[Getty] Syria\u2019s&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":94495,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[2665,33316,33317,95],"class_list":{"0":"post-94494","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-syria","8":"tag-post-assad-syria","9":"tag-sayyida-zeinab-shrine","10":"tag-shia-muslims","11":"tag-syria"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@iran\/116506098777546896","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94494","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=94494"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94494\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/94495"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=94494"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=94494"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=94494"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
