It is a blow to US President Donald Trump, who had proposed US$500 million to save Spirit despite opposition from some of his closest advisers and many Republicans in Congress.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">No US carrier of Spirit\u2019s size \u2013 it accounted for \u200c5 per cent of US flights at one point \u2013 has liquidated in two decades. Spirit helped keep fares lower in markets where it competed against major carriers.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A Spirit board meeting had ended without an agreement to rescue the company, a person close to the discussions said late on Friday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cUnfortunately, despite the company\u2019s efforts, the recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit\u2019s financial outlook,\u201d Spirit said in a statement announcing \u201can orderly wind-down of operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An airport employee passes the Spirit Airlines counter at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after the carrier shut down on Saturday.
