Iraq\u2019s Agriculture Ministry released more than nine million
\nnewly hatched carp fish into Lake Habbaniyah in Al-Anbar province, western
\nIraq, in an effort to boost fish stocks and support food security, the ministry
\nsaid on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The Directorate of Animal Resources carried out the release
\nin coordination with local authorities and under the supervision of a
\nspecialized technical team.<\/p>\n
On April 23, the ministry also released more than 11 million
\nfish into Lake Ana in Al-Anbar, including over 10 million common carp and more
\nthan one million gattan fish.<\/p>\n
Iraq\u2019s fisheries sector entered in November 2025 a policy transition<\/a> citing
\nsevere water shortages<\/a>, after the Ministry of Water
\nResources ordered the closure of all licensed earthen fish farms. The move
\nforms part of a broader shift toward closed-system aquaculture, which uses
\nsignificantly less water.<\/p>\n
