Trump said U.S. forces “shot down seven small boats” from Iran that were targeting vessels, including a South Korean cargo ship. Central Command reported that every Iranian attack has been thwarted so far. This marks the first major test of the president’s plan aimed at protecting commercial ships moving through the strait. U.S. officials said two American-flagged merchant ships successfully passed through the waterway on Monday. Iran has warned that any foreign military presence in the strait, “especially the aggressive U.S. military,” will be targeted, signaling its intent to make every passage a fight. The escalation has already caused oil and gas prices to surge, increasing the risk of prolonged conflict. “It’s going to come crashing down as soon as this war is over,” Trump said of oil prices. Energy experts, however, caution that the war is ongoing, and the successful passage of two ships does not mean the strait is fully operational. “We’re facing a reckoning coming up with summer driving, summer travel and much higher gasoline prices through the summer,” said Ed Hirs, an energy expert at the University of Houston. Iran’s attacks are also extending beyond the Strait of Hormuz. The United Arab Emirates reported that key oil facilities were hit by Iranian drones. The disruption in the strait affects more than just oil. The Gulf also moves natural gas, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, and fertilizer products.
