A fire has been extinguished on a ship operated by South Korean shipping company HMM in the Strait of Hormuz following an explosion, South Korea’s official Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The crew needed four hours to put out the flames, Yonhap reported, citing a company representative.<\/p>\n
There were no fatalities and there was no information about possible injuries among the 26-member crew.<\/p>\n
According to Yonhap, the ship was anchored in waters near the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz when the explosion occurred.<\/p>\n
US President Donald Trump had earlier said on Truth Social that Iran had fired on what he described as a South Korean cargo ship.<\/p>\n
The shipping company itself has so far not confirmed an attack. Yonhap cited an HMM employee as saying it was not yet clear “whether there was an external attack or whether the explosion was caused by an internal issue on the ship.”<\/p>\n
The vessel is now expected to be taken to Dubai by tugboat in the coming days.<\/p>\n
Roughly a fifth of the world’s traded oil and liquefied gas normally pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
