The Iran-Israel War Presents a Problem for Russia\u2019s Military Supply Chains<\/p>\n

Israel and the US\u2019s targeting of Iran\u2019s supply chain routes are starting to have a discernible impact on Russia\u2019s long-term infrastructure plans.<\/p>\n

Much of the practical fallout from the Iran-Israel war has understandably focused on the shuttering of the Strait of Hormuz. But for Russia, there are other vulnerabilities along its supply chain routes that war in the Middle East have laid bare.<\/p>\n

As has been\u00a0noted<\/a>, Russia\u2019s role in the war was constrained by necessity, the practical limitations of its own military resources, as well as diplomatic caution over its nascent relationship with the US. But that has not made the Kremlin immune to spillover from the conflict. While rising oil prices presented a brief economic boon to a power reliant on hydrocarbon production and export, this war revealed the persistent vulnerability of Russia\u2019s long-distance supply chains in the Caspian Sea, a geographical area that it does not fully control.<\/p>\n
