{"id":99281,"date":"2026-05-05T19:15:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/99281\/"},"modified":"2026-05-05T19:15:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T19:15:13","slug":"hamas-disarmament-almost-impossible-to-bridge-as-gaps-with-board-of-peace-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/iran\/99281\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamas disarmament &#8216;almost impossible to bridge&#8217; as gaps with Board of Peace grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The gaps between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/hamas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hamas<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/article-892606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Board of Peace<\/a> on the issue of Gaza\u2019s disarmament are very wide, according to several sources who spoke to The Jerusalem Post. \u201cHamas didn\u2019t say no, but essentially it is almost impossible to bridge the gaps,\u201d the sources told the Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">In recent weeks, a number of meetings have taken place between senior Board of Peace officials, including the council\u2019s director-general Nickolay Mladenov, and senior Hamas figures, in an attempt to reach an agreement on Hamas disarmament.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">According to sources familiar with the details of the talks, the negotiations have not produced an agreement. Hamas\u2019s response has effectively been \u201cyes, but\u201d with the \u201cbut\u201d reflecting extensive demands and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>An Israeli source told the Post that Israel is coordinating with the Board of Peace and the US administration to plan the next steps following Hamas\u2019s refusal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u201cNo one was surprised six months ago, and no one is surprised today that Hamas refuses to disarm \u2013 including the US and the mediators,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Mladenov, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, and other senior Board of Peace officials, including Aryeh Lightstone, the chief director of the Trump administration\u2019s Gaza reconstruction project. According to two sources, the meeting was described as positive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">One source said that \u201cthere is no gap between Israel and the Board of Peace regarding the ultimate goal for the situation in Gaza \u2013 namely, the disarmament of Hamas \u2013 and that only this can lead to the reconstruction of the Strip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">The Board of Peace\u2019s plan envisions that, in the first phase, Hamas would give up its heavy offensive weapons, and its tunnels would be destroyed.
