Ida Tin \u00e8 imprenditrice, giovane e visionaria, conosciuta a livello internazionale come fondatrice di Clue<\/strong><\/a>, una delle app di tracciamento del ciclo mestruale pi\u00f9 diffuse al mondo. Ma soprattutto \u00e8 la persona che ha coniato il termine \u201cfemtech\u201d<\/strong>, aprendo la strada a un settore oggi in crescita, anche in Italia,<\/a> che unisce tecnologia e salute femminile, portando al centro del dibattito la questione della medicina di genere.<\/p>\n

Con lei, ospite dell\u2019evento Tech4Fem Future Health<\/a> di Tech4Fem, abbiamo parlato di come il femtech si sia evoluto negli anni, delle sfide ancora aperte \u2013 dai tab\u00f9 culturali alla carenza di ricerca basata sui dati delle donne \u2013 e delle prospettive future,<\/p>\n

Quando hai coniato il termine femtech era un concetto del tutto nuovo. Come vedi oggi il settore e quali aspetti ritieni siano ancora sottovalutati?<\/p>\n

\u00abIl settore ha attirato sia talenti che capitali, e la consapevolezza \u00e8 cresciuta. Ma s\u00ec, credo ancora che la salute femminile non sia riconosciuta per ci\u00f2 che \u00e8 davvero: un\u2019infrastruttura sociale. Le societ\u00e0 perdono e sprecano enormi quantit\u00e0 di energia e potenziale umano perch\u00e9 le donne devono affrontare pi\u00f9 difficolt\u00e0 legate alla salute di quanto sarebbe necessario. Non mi riferisco alle malattie legate allo stile di vita, dove spetta al singolo adottare comportamenti sani.<\/p>\n

Parlo delle numerose condizioni ed eventi che riguardano le donne per ragioni biologiche: complicazioni legate a gravidanza e parto, endometriosi o cisti. O ancora, la salute cardiovascolare o le malattie autoimmuni che colpiscono le donne in modo diverso rispetto agli uomini. Ci mancano moltissimi studi, protocolli e soluzioni basati su dati femminili e progettati specificamente per le donne\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Credi che ci siano ancora tab\u00f9 che frenano la ricerca o l\u2019innovazione nella salute femminile?<\/p>\n

\u00abS\u00ec, assolutamente. Ci sono molte esperienze di vita vissuta delle donne che non hanno visibilit\u00e0 nella cultura mainstream. C\u2019\u00e8 sia una mancanza di consapevolezza, sia una tendenza a considerare meno importanti le esperienze che riguardano solo le donne. Spesso non \u00e8 cattiva volont\u00e0, ma il fatto che chi formula le domande di ricerca, prende decisioni nelle aziende farmaceutiche o stacca assegni di investimento in venture capital, sono uomini. E questi non hanno un\u2019esperienza corporea diretta dell\u2019urgenza di innovare e risolvere problemi che tutte le donne affrontano\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Quali sono stati i pregiudizi pi\u00f9 difficili da superare quando presentavi progetti di salute femminile a investitori e partner?<\/p>\n

\u00abForse l\u2019idea sbagliata che le opportunit\u00e0 di mercato nel femtech siano di nicchia. Non lo sono.
Ci sono poi anche dinamiche legate alle relazioni umane tra uomini e donne che possono ostacolare le imprenditrici quando cercano capitali. Guardando ai prossimi dieci anni, quale bisogno insoddisfatto nella salute femminile speri diventi finalmente una priorit\u00e0 per il femtech?<\/p>\n

\u00abSto iniziando a lavorare su una sfida di finanziamento pubblico legata al monitoraggio continuo degli ormoni. Credo che un dataset solido sugli ormoni femminili, con dati in tempo reale, sar\u00e0 rivoluzionario. Sia per i consumatori sia per il settore sanitario. Sono molto entusiasta della velocit\u00e0 e della portata che l\u2019innovazione potrebbe avere nei prossimi tre anni in questo ambito. La mia speranza \u00e8 riunire i migliori team, ricercatori e leader industriali in questa sfida e, come gruppo, creare una vera innovazione di rottura, a beneficio della salute delle donne\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Ida Tin is an entrepreneur and visionary, internationally known as the founder of Clue<\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s most popular menstrual tracking apps. She is also the person who coined the term \u201cfemtech\u201d<\/strong>, paving the way for a fast-growing sector \u2013 also in Italy \u2013 that brings together technology and women\u2019s health.
In this interview, she reflects on how femtech has evolved over the years, the challenges that remain \u2014 from cultural taboos to the lack of research based on women\u2019s data \u2014 and the opportunities ahead, with a special focus on innovation in hormone monitoring.<\/p>\n

Mrs. Tin, When you first coined the term femtech, it was an entirely new concept. How do you see the sector today, and what aspects do you think are still underestimated?<\/p>\n

\u00abThe sector has attracted both talent and capital, and awareness has raised. But yes, I still think women\u2019s health isn\u2019t recognised as the societal infrastructure it truly is. Societies are losing and wasting a lot of human energy and potential because women struggle more with their health than they should. I am not thinking of lifestyle diseases where it\u2019s up to the individual to live healthy.<\/p>\n

I am talking about the many conditions and events that affect women because of the biology we have, like complications in relation to pregnancy and birth, endometriosis or cysts. Or cardiovascular health or autoimmune conditions that affect women differently than men. We lack lots of research, protocols and solutions that are built on data on women and shaped to work for women specifically\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Do you believe there are still taboos that hold back research or innovation in women\u2019s health?<\/p>\n

\u00abYes, for sure. There are many lived life experiences that women have that aren\u2019t visible in our mainstream culture. There is both a lack of awareness and a tendency to view experiences that only women have as less important. Often it\u2019s not ill will, but the ones coming up with research questions, making decisions in medical companies, or writing venture checks are men. And they lack the immediate bodily experience of the importance of innovating and solving these problems that all women encounter\u00bb.<\/p>\n

What were the most challenging biases you encountered when pitching women\u2019s health to investors and partners?<\/p>\n

\u00abMaybe the misconception that market opportunities in femtech are niche. They are not.
There are also things around the human relations between men and women that can get in the way when female founders pitch for capital. I wrote a guide for men investing in female founders in femtech. It\u2019s free on my LinkedIn page. I hope it can help with that meeting between genders\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead ten years, which unmet need in women\u2019s health do you hope will finally become a priority for femtech?<\/p>\n

\u00abI am just starting out with scoping a public grant challenge around continuous hormone monitoring. I think a solid dataset on women\u2019s hormones, and real time data, will be a game changer. Both for consumers and the healthcare industry. I am very excited about how fast and far we can move innovation over the next three years in this field.
