From sporting events to spring festivals and transport strikes, here’s what people in Italy can expect this week.

Monday, May 11th

Boston-Milan flight route launches – American low-cost airline JetBlue on Monday launches its new summer flight route linking Boston with Milan Malpensa, with daily departures scheduled from either destination.

Air travel strike – Monday is an unlucky day for airline passengers travelling to and from Italy, who could see their journey disrupted due to a nationwide walkout.

Air traffic controllers and other technical and support staff at airports in Milan, Cagliari, Palermo, Naples and Rome have announced a series of walkouts, while EasyJet workers plan to strike from 10am to 6pm on the same day.

Tuesday, May 12th

Giro d’Italia arrives in Italy – The 109th edition of Italy’s premier cycling competition arrives in Calabria on Tuesday, following the Grande Partenza in Bulgaria.

The fourth stage will see the riders race from the regional capital of Catanzaro to the city of Cosenza, taking in the Tyrrhenian Coast.

Wednesday, May 13th

Coppa Italia final – The final match of Italy’s annual domestic football tournament takes place on Wednesday, with Lazio set to face off against Inter Milan.

Kick off is at 9pm at Rome’s Olympic Stadium; fans will be able to watch the match at home on Channel 5 or via streaming at Mediaset Infinity.

Friday, May 15th

General strike – Italy’s second general strike of the month (after May 1st Labour Day work stoppages) is scheduled to start on Friday, with union CSLE calling on all public and private sector workers to strike until the end of Saturday, May 16th.

Staff of Milan’s public transport operator ATM have announced a 24-hour strike on Friday that is likely to cause major disruption in the northern city, with local bus strikes also expected in the provinces of Perugia, Padua, Salerno, Terni and Rovigo.

Infiorata di Noto begins – The Baroque Sicilian city of Noto’s annual infiorata flower petal display opens on Friday and is set to remain in place until Tuesday, May 19th.

This year’s flower carpet is themed around pop art and culture from the 20th century, and can be found on Via Nicolaci in the historic centre.

Summer tyre change deadline – Motorists in Italy have until Friday to switch from winter to summer tyres or face a fine of up to €1,731 – though the rule doesn’t apply to everyone.

Saturday, May 16th

Italian Open women’s finals – The women’s finals of this year’s Italian Open tennis tournament, also known as the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, are set to take place at 11am on Sunday at Rome’s Foro Italico.

People wanting to watch the matches at home can view live on Sky Sport or on streaming catch up with NOW.

Mandatory licence plates for e-scooters – From Saturday, May 16th, it will become compulsory for all e-scooters in Italy to display a small adhesive licence “plate” or face a fine of between €100 and €400.

Sunday, May 17th

Festa della Sensa – Sunday will see Venice celebrate its relationship with water with the annual Festa della Sensa (Ascension Festival).

The festival traditionally saw the city’s rulers (a role that in modern times is performed by the mayor) cast a gold ring into the lagoon to celebrate the ‘marriage’ between Venice and the sea. A regatta, rowing races, a market and concerts accompany the ritual.

Italian Open men’s finals – The final doubles and single men’s matches of Italian Open are scheduled for 11am on Sunday at Rome’s Foro Italico.
