Over the past week, a major State Police operation, conducted by the PolMetro unit, led to the arrest of eight people, including five pickpockets and three drug dealers. The operations focused on the capital’s main train stations, amidst crowded platforms and passing trains, places where the most vulnerable victims are targeted.
Fighting small-time drug dealing: Dealers arrested during quick sales
In the fight against drug trafficking, police intercepted two separate incidents of small-scale trafficking, typical of the drug delivery system. During the operations, the dealers, a middle-aged woman and a young man, were arrested while selling drugs to consumers who arrived in vehicles ready to leave after the quick exchange. Police seized 12 packages of cocaine and crack, €625 in cash, and a cell phone likely used to contact the buyers. The alleged customer of one of the two arrested individuals was also charged with possession of four doses of narcotics.
Serial pickpockets arrested along the subway line A
At the same time, the same constant monitoring activity led to the arrest of five pickpockets. Taking advantage of the crowds of passengers, the thieves operated between the “Battistini” and “Colosseo” stops, taking advantage of the crowd to steal valuables from tourists and commuters. In one case, a lone pickpocket was arrested immediately after stealing a cell phone from a victim’s pocket. In another incident, a pair of accomplices attempted to isolate a tourist to rob him, but were apprehended before the theft could be completed. Two men of Georgian origin were also arrested while persistently following passengers, likely to plan another theft.
Arrested for resisting arrest and assaulting a public official
Finally, a young man was arrested for resisting a public officer and assault after causing disruption on the subway platform by preventing passengers from boarding trains. Not content with this, he reacted violently when officers intervened to stop him. All arrests were validated by the Judicial Authority, which took the necessary measures against those responsible.
