It has been four years in the making, but we finally have the first images of Kate Middleton on an official international trip outside the United Kingdom. From Wednesday, May 13, through Thursday, May 14, the Princess of Wales is visiting the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia. The trip marks a major milestone for The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood as the charitable organization of the Prince and Princess expands its reach abroad.

A Highly Anticipated Return to the Global Stage
The visit has generated immense buzz because it is her first working trip overseas since 2022. It is worth noting that all such international engagements were immediately canceled following the Princess’s cancer diagnosis. While Kate has been gradually returning to her official duties, an overseas tour was the final piece of the puzzle. This trip to Italy represents a new chapter in her royal role.

Minutes before her arrival, crowds of locals gathered while clutching signs and wearing fascinators as a nod to the Princess’s signature style. With the city center closed to traffic and a heavy security detail in place, the scene turned into a frenzy the moment she stepped out of her official vehicle. Kate was met with a true “bath of the masses,” proving once again that she is a global icon who commands attention wherever she goes.

Elegance and Purpose in Every Detail
For the engagement, Princess Kate chose a blue tailored suit by Edeline Lee. She styled the look with her signature long waves, a matching blue clutch, and towering tan heels. During the walkabout, she took a moment to stop and chat with a group of children who had been waiting for her.

Driven by the Princess’ personal initiative, the visit focuses on early childhood development and serves as a high-level fact-finding mission to witness international approaches to supporting young children and their caregivers. Kate is deeply committed to the idea that the first few years of life are critical to a person’s future health and emotional well-being.
Exploring the World-Renowned Reggio Emilia Approach
The choice of Reggio Emilia was intentional since Kate wanted to explore how other countries approach early childhood care and which social and emotional development factors they prioritize. The Reggio Emilia approach is world-renowned in early education. It places relationships, the environment, and community at the heart of a child’s development. Its unique philosophy is centered on creativity, connection, and hands-on discovery. It is highly prestigious within the sector.

Formal Honors at City Hall
The Princess arrived at Piazza Prampolini in the late morning and was formally received at City Hall by Mayor Marco Massari. Following a private meeting with the Mayor and city officials, Kate discussed the cultural and educational history that allowed the Reggio approach to flourish. She was accompanied by key figures who helped shape the philosophy. After the meeting, she stepped out into the square to greet members of the city council.

Mayor Massari will present the Princess with the Primo Tricolore, which is the highest honor of the city, in recognition of her visit. As the Mayor noted in a recent statement, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales is visiting the city to see firsthand the extraordinary and world-famous Reggio Emilia educational approach.

With this trip, Kate Middleton officially resumes her international agenda. This move was made possible by her positive recovery. While her UK schedule increasingly includes major state events, the calendar of the future Queen Consort remains less packed than it was before her illness. Her public appearances are now carefully selected for maximum impact.

Looking Back at Her Previous International Tours

The last major official tour for Kate was in 2022 when she and Prince William traveled to Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II for her Platinum Jubilee. Later that year, as Prince and Princess of Wales, they traveled to Boston for the second annual Earthshot Prize Awards. Outside of official work, the couple traveled to Jordan in 2023 for the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa. This was the last major international event they attended together before the announcement of Kate’s illness.
