With an eye on the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games later this year, Neeraj Chopra’s request for a 47-day off-season training camp in Switzerland was approved by the Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) on Wednesday.
The two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra is yet to start his 2026 athletics season.
A Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) Core athlete, Neeraj Chopra is currently rehabilitating from a back injury in Turkiye and will train at the Olympic Training Centre in Bienne from May 25 to July 10.
The Indian javelin throw ace was last seen in action at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo in September, where he competed with a back injury and finished a disappointing eighth.
The 28-year-old Indian athlete will be accompanied by his long-time physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha and coach Jai Choudhary.
Neeraj Chopra won gold in the 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games and is also a two-time Asian Games champion.
The MOC also approved foreign training for star pistol shooter and Paris 2024 medallist Manu Bhaker in Lucca, Italy, from May 13 to 22.
The 24-year-old Indian shooter, who is set to compete in the women’s 10m air pistol and 25m pistol events at the upcoming Asian Games, will be accompanied by her coach Jaspal Rana and physiotherapist Snehil Khurana in Italy.
Shooting is not a part of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Furthermore, the MOC also approved long-distance runner Gulveer Singh’s proposal for foreign training and competition exposure along with his coach in the United States from May 15 to June 17 – a period of 34 days.
Gulveer, an Asian Games bronze medallist and gold medal winner in the 5000m and 10000m races at Asian Championships, will compete in Los Angeles and Nashville.
The Commonwealth Games will be staged in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, while the Asian Games will be organised in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
