ROME, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Rome Police are investigating a body that was found in the City of Rome early Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the area of Railroad Street between Bouck and Mill Streets in the early morning of Wednesday, April 1 for a report of a deceased male outside. Rome Police say that the identity of the person was not released, pending identification and notification of next of kin.

The Detective Division of the Rome Police Department has been assigned to the scene. The section of Railroad Street where the body was found has been closed. The public has been asked to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

Rome Police have said that the area, which is near the Mohawk River, is commonly populated by homeless people who sleep along the riverbank.

Officers say that more information is expected to be released later in the day on Wednesday, April 1.
