ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Tyson Foods will soon shut down a plant in Rome, Georgia, resulting in 168 layoffs.
The facility at 10 Darlington Dr. SW — which operated under The Hillshire Brands Company, a Tyson subsidiary — will close on May 31.
The company announced the news to the city’s mayor and the Georgia Department of Labor in a letter on March 26, attributing the closure to contract losses.
“Tyson Foods regrets that its team members must be displaced yet hopes to accomplish this plant closure with the least possible disruption to team members, their families, and the community,” the letter said.
According to the letter, employees were notified the same day. Under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, employers must tell employees about plant closures or mass layoffs at least 60 days in advance.
Tyson Foods is the country’s largest chicken processor, and Georgia is the nation’s leading state for poultry production. But recently, the company has scaled back its operations, including closing a Nebraska beef processing plant in January.
