This is the fourth distinct heatwave Italy has experienced since late May 2026 — an unusual and climatologically significant frequency. CNR researcher Massimiliano Pasqui, a senior scientist at the Institute for BioEconomy of the Italian National Research Council, told local media that the current wave is being sustained by what he described as a persistent omega high-pressure pattern: a configuration named for the Greek letter’s shape in the atmosphere, in which a dome of hot, high-pressure air locks in place while low-pressure systems on either side prevent it from moving.
