Although offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio wasn’t with the Pittsburgh Steelers a year ago, even he can feel the difference WR Roman Wilson and QB Aaron Rodgers have in their second season together. Wilson has ascended during camp looking more confident, playing to his timed speed and clearly outpacing rookie Germie Bernard through the first few weeks of training camp.

Angelichio isn’t making any predictions but offered plenty of praise.

“I think Rome’s done a great job,” Angelichio said via Steelers.com’s Brian Batko. “I think it’s really cool him and Aaron seem like they’re on the same page in their communication and where he needs to be with the concepts. Rome’s really worked hard in his preparation and film study.”

There was an obvious disconnect a year ago. Rodgers and Wilson struggled to gain chemistry. Rodgers was new to the team, Wilson was in his first year playing after a rookie year marred by injuries. Neither felt comfortable with the other. By season’s end, veteran additions got the nod over Wilson. A coach from the outside like Angelichio could plainly see that on the film.

Now, Wilson is firmly in the driver’s seat for the No. 3 position. Speaking to reporters yesterday, he noted he feels like himself again and playing to the talents that made him a weapon at Michigan and top 100 draft pick.

Per our training camp stats, Wilson is third among all wide receivers with nine receptions. His low catch rate is reflective of a couple of miscommunications, but he and Rodgers have also made several big plays. During Tuesday’s practice, the pair connected on two touchdowns, including a two-minute drill score to end the day.

In a vacuum, Wilson has been the second-best wide receiver this summer ahead of Michael Pittman Jr. and only behind DK Metcalf.

Wilson will need his play to translate. He’s flashed during the summer before and made plays last preseason before shrinking once the games counted. Every sign, however, has been positive. That’s been noticed by fans, media, players, and now confirmed by Wilson’s coaches.
