The Last One for the Road Trailer

“Are you ever going to grow up?” “We’re too old to grow up.” Music Box Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie dramedy film titled The Last One for the Road, an Italian buddy comedy road trip film from filmmaker Francesco Sossai. Also known as Le città di pianura in Italian, this premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival last year and already opened in Italian cinemas last fall. Carlobianchi & Doriano, two broke fiftysomething guys with a “never skip the last drink” philosophy, meet Giulio, a shy architecture student adrift in life. They’re small time crooks but haven’t pulled off a real scam in decades, still drinking their way through life. What starts as a chance encounter turns into a chaotic road trip through the Venetian plains — where bad advice, hangovers, and unexpected friendship redraw Giulio’s plans for life and love. The trio wander from bar to bar around Veneto dispensing their brand of wisdom. Starring Filippo Scotti, Sergio Romano, and Pierpaolo Capovilla. Sossai’s “dazzling sophomore feature is many things at once: a road movie, a casual caper, a tribute to a vanishing industrial Italy, a scruffy intergenerational odyssey, and free-flowing bender through time and space.” Sounds like zany fun. Chilling with drunk ol’ Italian guys.

The bottom has fallen out for Carlobianchi (Sergio Romano) & Doriano (Pierpaolo Capovilla), two small-time Italian crooks. They haven’t been able to mount an honest scam since the 2008 financial crisis and now face impending mediocrity of middle age. The return of an exiled partner-in-crime from Argentina affords a second chance for long-buried riches, but can Carlobianchi and Doriano put down their beers long enough to keep their eyes on the prize? Along their slow motion, alcoholic grand tour of the Venetian countryside, they cross paths with Giulio, a shy architecture student who reluctantly warms to the sodden pair and indulges their rants about the folly of globalization and the slow decline of local color. Each roadside tavern offers the promise of one last drink – unless the next one ups the ante. Francesco Sossai’s dazzling sophomore feature is many things at once: a road movie, a casual caper, a tribute to a vanishing industrial Italy, a scruffy intergenerational odyssey, a uniquely free-flowing bender through time & space.

The Last One for the Road, also known as Le città di pianura (meaning The Cities of the Plain) in Italian, is directed by eccentric Italian filmmaker Francesco Sossai, director of the film Other Cannibals previously, plus a few other short films. The screenplay is written by Adriano Candiago & Francesco Sossai. Produced by Marta Donzelli, Philipp Kreuzer, Gregorio Paonessa, Cecilia Trautvetter. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival last year in the Un Certain Regard section. It also opened in Italy in the fall last year. Music Box Films releases Sossai’s The Last One for the Road in select US theaters starting May 1st, 2026.
