ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Floyd County commissioners voted Monday to approve costs associated with work to stabilize Rome’s historic courthouse after it was destroyed in a March fire.
Many are wondering whether the courthouse should be rebuilt or if it should be demolished to build a new one. Now, leaders want crews to get on the site so they can advise them on what’s next.
“Whether we take it apart brick by brick or whether we demolish it and start over,” County Manager Jamie McCord said. “I mean, we’ve just got a lot of unanswered questions right now.”
It’s a costly project, at about half a million dollars, according to McCord, who also said it’s necessary.

Figuring out a solution for the historic courthouse site will also help alleviate problems around that area, because businesses have been impacted by the road closures, as well as traffic.
“We’ve got businesses, we’ve got residences, we’ve got people living, working and playing downtown on a regular basis,” McCord said.
