ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Braves catcher Sean Murphy will begin his rehab assignment with High-A Rome on Tuesday, the team announced.
Murphy underwent surgery on a right hip labral tear in September after saying the injury had bothered him for years.
The 31-year-old missed most of spring training and has not seen game action since Sept. 6. Beginning a rehab assignment starts a 20-day countdown to his return, but watch for the Braves to use every one of those 20 days.
Murphy’s return will likely spell the end of Jonah Heim’s time on the major league roster. Heim has split time behind the plate with star Drake Baldwin, but that arrangement has not gone well.
Heim has gone 3-for-19 with three strikeouts in 2026 and had a throwing error in the Braves’ 6-0 loss to the Cleveland Guardians April 11.
The Braves also announced Tuesday that they had recalled left-handed pitcher Hayden Harris from Triple-A Gwinnett and optioned right-handed pitcher Rolddy Muñoz.
The Braves play the Miami Marlins live on Gray TV stations throughout the Southeast on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
