From the Italian perspective, it also helps that the emissary is Rubio, viewed by many in Rome as closer to a pre-2016 Republican internationalist than figures like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eui.eu\/news-hub?id=a-week-that-felt-like-a-decade-europe-reels-from-j.d.-vances-speech-in-munich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">JD Vance<\/a>, widely seen in European capitals as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/25\/stunning-signal-leak-reveals-depths-of-trump-administrations-loathing-of-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hostile<\/a> to what they regard as freeloading allies.<\/p>\n<p>Rubio has also built goodwill with Rome through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.editorialedomani.it\/politica\/mondo\/trentini-ostaggi-italiani-venezuela-strategia-governo-aiuto-usa-j29fjmyd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cooperation<\/a> with Tajani on Venezuela, including efforts to secure the release of detained Italians.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Meloni is navigating a more complicated domestic landscape.
