For years, fans of Jersey Shore<\/a> have treated the neck brace as a punchline. Now, Mike \u201cThe Situation\u201d Sorrentino<\/a> is revealing what was really going on behind the scenes \u2014 and it\u2019s no joke.<\/p>\n

During the Tuesday, May 5 episode of More Life with Carl Radke<\/a> podcast, the reality star, 43, opened up about the season 4 scene where he slammed his head into a concrete wall during the cast\u2019s trip<\/a> to Florence, Italy.<\/p>\n

What viewers saw as a wild, reckless outburst following an argument with castmate Ronnie Ortiz-Magro<\/a> was actually the result of something Sorrentino, 43, had been hiding from everyone around him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that moment, I really wanted no part of it because I was going through withdrawal for the last day or two, and no one knew about it but me,\u201d Sorrentino said on the podcast. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh my God, man. I\u2019m about to go through withdrawal on one of the biggest TV shows in the country.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The incident, which left him wearing a neck brace for a majority of the rest of the season, has become one of Jersey Shore\u2018s most recognizable images \u2014 it was far from a highlight reel moment. \u201cIt actually is my worst moment, right? But it is the most iconic moment,\u201d Sorrentino said.<\/p>\n

Later in the conversation, the dad of three \u2014 who shares Romeo, 5, Mia Bella, 3, and Luna, 2, with wife Lauren<\/a> \u2014 reflected on how surreal the legacy of that scene has become: \u201cIt\u2019s like a mind f**k, right? That your worst moment on TV turned out to almost be like your best moment, where it changed your life.\u201d<\/p>\n

That change didn\u2019t come immediately, however. Sorrentino first publicly acknowledged his struggle with opioid addiction in 2012, when he checked himself into a 60-day rehab program. He relapsed years later after a rib injury led to a painkiller prescription. But the head-into-the-wall incident was a turning point he didn\u2019t fully recognize at the time.<\/p>\n

He revealed on the podcast that MTV stepped in after the Italy trip, issuing a direct ultimatum. \u201cThey said, \u2018If Mike \u201cThe Situation\u201d doesn\u2019t go to rehab and come back \u201cThe Situation\u201d that we love from season 1, then don\u2019t come back at all,’\u201d Sorrentino recalled. \u201cAnd that shook me too. Because I believed that I was meant to be on reality TV, and I was born for that, and I was about to ruin it and ruin my dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sorrentino is approaching 11 years of sobriety and has since turned his recovery into a second act, running an addiction treatment center in New Jersey. He told the podcast\u2019s host, Carl Radke,<\/a> he now embraces the neck brace moment \u2014 so much so that he\u2019s having a sculpture made of himself wearing it. \u201cIt\u2019s a very iconic moment in reality TV, but it\u2019s one of the times that, you know, shook me to my core,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a fitting conversation for Radke\u2019s podcast. The Summer House star<\/a>, 41, has been open about his own battle with addiction, getting sober in January 2021 after years of struggling with alcohol and cocaine use, much of which played out on camera on the Bravo series.<\/p>\n
