There are matchups involving plenty of big hitters as well as players who play with more guile and court craft. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Alexandra Eala vs Elena Rybakina. But who will secure their spot in the last 16?

WTA Rome Day 6 Predictions
Elina Svitolina vs Hailey Baptiste

Head-to-head: Svitolina 1-1 Baptiste

Hailey Baptiste is in some of the best clay-court form of her life following an impressive run in Madrid, where she reached the semifinals. Elina Svitolina had quite a contrasting outing in Madrid, losing in her first match in rather tame fashion. The head-to-head is tied, but Svitolina won their only meeting on clay, which coincidentally was a year ago at this same event.

This surface suits the Ukrainian better, as she has the patience and resilience to play drawn-out points, as well as an excellent record at WTA Rome. The hard-hitting, highly aggressive Baptiste will look to move Svitolina around. Still, the Ukrainian remains one of the most defensively astute players on tour and should bait her into more and more errors as the match progresses. This is probably the tournament that Svitolina gets up and running

Prediction: Svitolina in 3

Jessica Pegula vs Rebecca Masarova

Head-to-head: first meeting

By her usual standards, Jessica Pegula had a rather underwhelming outing in Madrid and will be looking to course-correct here. She is one of those players who you feel the clay of Madrid should suit nicely. She comes up against the qualifier Masarova in what feels like an easy match-up for her. The Swiss player had a good win over Leylah Fernandez in her last match, but this takes things up several notches. Pegula enjoyed a nice, comfortable win in her first match here, and there’s no reason to believe that will not continue here. Expect the American to take control of this match from the get-go and progress to the next round at WTA Rome.

Prediction: Pegula in 2

Naomi Osaka vs Diana Shnaider

Head-to-head: first meeting

This should be one of the more entertaining matches on day six at WTA Rome, featuring as it does the controlled power of Naomi Osaka against the lefty guile and point construction abilities of Diana Shnaider. Both players will be keen to impose their styles and dominate, but there is relatively little between them on paper, despite Osaka’s more distinguished CV.

Shnaider is probably more suited to clay courts, but Osaka has shown time and again that she can be dangerous on this surface. There promises to be lots of momentum shifts throughout the match, and in truth, a strong case can be made for both players chances of winning here. That said, Shnaider hasn’t been particularly brilliant on clay this season, and Osaka showed some solid tennis despite limited success.

Prediction: Osaka in 3

Elisabetta Cocciaretto vs Iga Swiatek

Head-to-head: Swiatek 1-0 Cocciaretto

Iga Swiatek’s clay-court prowess is well known, despite her not being anywhere near her best in recent times. Despite that, in Elisabetta Cocciaretto, she now faces a player she absolutely dismantled last year at this same event, losing only one game in the process. The Italian had a moral-boosting straight-sets win against a solid player in Emma Navarro and should make this more of a contest than the last time, particularly as she will have the WTA Rome crowd on her side.

Expect a better outing for Cocciaretto this time, but it’s still hard to see anything she could use to hurt Swiatek. The former world #1 will be hoping to build some steam ahead of Roland Garros, where she’d be looking to reclaim the title. It’s difficult to see anything beyond a comfortable win for the Pole.

Prediction: Swiatek in 2

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Day six at WTA Rome promises to be an interesting day.
