I am innocent. I did not kill my wife,&#8221; Gilley told the court, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/texas-man-fled-italy-arrest-pregnant-wifes-murder-tells-judge-s-innoce-rcna344510\">according to NBC News.<\/a> &#8220;The only crime I committed was fleeing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gilley told the judge he fled because he feared for his life and said he does not trust the U.S. justice system. An autopsy found she was pregnant at the time.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/husband-charged-pregnant-physical-therapist-wifes-murder-after-giving-police-different-story\">HUSBAND CHARGED IN PREGNANT PHYSICAL THERAPIST WIFE&#8217;S MURDER AFTER GIVING POLICE A DIFFERENT STORY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Charging documents <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2026\/05\/04\/man-accused-of-murdering-pregnant-wife-in-houston-heights-in-2024-has-&#039;fled-the-jurisdiction&#039;\/\">obtained by KPRC<\/a> allege Gilley caused her death by applying pressure to her neck and upper body. Prosecutors have said he gave inconsistent accounts of what happened and initially claimed he tried to save his wife with CPR. He later acknowledged she was not suicidal and that the couple had been arguing before her death, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters\">SIGN UP TO GET TRUE CRIME NEWSLETTER<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gilley was arrested days after the incident but later released on bond. His trial had been scheduled to begin this month.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say Gilley cut off his court-ordered GPS ankle monitor and fled the country ahead of a scheduled <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/entertainment\/events\/in-court\">court appearance<\/a>. (Christa Bauer Gilley\/Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>Investigators believe Gilley traveled from Texas to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/world\/world-regions\/canada\">Canada<\/a> and then on to Italy, where he was detained upon arrival in Milan. (Christa Bauer Gilley\/Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>Instead of returning to Texas, Gilley is now seeking asylum in Italy, arguing he is being &#8220;wrongfully prosecuted&#8221; and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/death-penalty-possible-random-hiking-murders-left-children-without-mom-dad-former-local-prosecutor\">fears the death penalty<\/a>.
