We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/italy-italian-rome-reggio-emilia-wales-b2976586.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Princess of Wales<\/a> has revealed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/kate-middleton-italy-reggio-emilia-b2975525.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unexpected source of environmental inspiration<\/a>, citing the popular children&#8217;s character Bob the Builder. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/kate-middleton-reggio-emilia-approach-parenting-b2975854.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kate<\/a> explained that her family adheres to the animated workman&#8217;s philosophy of not letting anything go to waste.<\/p>\n<p>During a visit to an Italian project dedicated to re-using industrial surplus, the Princess discussed the principles at the Remida centre in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/princess-of-wales-reggio-emilia-italy-b2975548.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Reggio Emilia<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>She said: &#8220;There\u2019s a popular character called Bob the Builder and he has a philosophy of \u2018reduce, reuse, recycle\u2019 and you embrace that here. It\u2019s something as a mother, and I feel as a family we do a lot, is try to have at the back of our minds.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The princess travelled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/italy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Italy<\/a> to learn about Reggio Emilia\u2019s world-renowned education programme for young children that stresses the importance of parents, educators and the environment \u2013 \u201cthe third teacher\u201d \u2013 that surround a child.<\/p>\n<p>She began her day visiting a public infant-toddler centre and nursery school in the city to learn more about the education system and joined children at an outside activity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/e6383c555002a87764873a7ea2bdc5f8Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzc4ODUzMjI4-2.84615307.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Princess of Wales during her visit to Remida, il Centro di Riciclaggio Creativo in Reggio Emilia\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The Princess of Wales during her visit to Remida, il Centro di Riciclaggio Creativo in Reggio Emilia (Ian Vogler\/Daily Mirror\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The school places an emphasis on outdoor learning and environmental education and Kate talked to children and staff as they handled newts from a tank.<\/p>\n<p>She paid tribute to broadcaster and naturalist Sir <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/david-attenborough\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Attenborough<\/a> who recently celebrated his 100 birthday, saying: \u201cIn most urban areas, even in central London, we have newts like this. It\u2019s extraordinary, if you look and spend time, you realise how close it is to you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid Attenborough says you have to be able to experience nature in order to protect it \u2013 it\u2019s so true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During her visit to the Remida centre, Kate learned it was a resource hub where teachers can bring pre-school children to work on special projects designed to boost their learning through creativity.<\/p>\n<p>Unwanted materials, including brightly-coloured wool, string, textiles and larger plastic tubes are brought to the centre after being donated by companies, including Tetra Pak.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c2c2a5c1eaa2436e66110912c39eab8aY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzc4ODUzNTQ4-2.84614657.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Kate earlier visited during Salvador Allende Scuola dell\u2019infanzia in Reggio Emilia\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Kate earlier visited during Salvador Allende Scuola dell\u2019infanzia in Reggio Emilia ((Jordan Pettitt\/PA))<\/p>\n<p>The children are then invited to use materials in workshops run at the centre, which receives more than 3,000 visitors a year including educators and teachers from around the world.<\/p>\n<p>After hearing about the public private partnership that makes the centre possible, Kate was told about how the whole society worked together in Reggio Emilia to support early years education.<\/p>\n<p>Kate nodded and said: \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019ve really picked up on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She touched some of the fabric swatches that children can use to create collages and said that it was \u201cfantastic to see\u201d materials being reused which would \u201cotherwise go to landfill\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The princess recognised her Italian host by wearing a blazer from Blaze Milano, a luxury Italian womenswear brand, and what appeared to be a fabric bracelet by Atelier Molayem, a Milan-based jewellery company.<\/p>\n<p>Kate ended her visit to Italy by taking on the role of a \u201crezdora\u201d or housewife, making fresh tortelli pasta, a typical dish from the Emilia-Romagna region.<\/p>\n<p>She kneaded flour, oil, salt and water in a large bowl with her hands and said: \u201cWhen I do this at home it\u2019s without a big bowl and it goes everywhere, it\u2019s a good workout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The princess was visiting Agriturismo Al Vigneto, a farm-stay vineyard an hour\u2019s drive from Reggio Emilia and she laughed when the handle fell off a pasta machine she used to roll the dough.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/92b35e99fae8d0f4e6473a3f1b4292a0Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNzc4ODU2Nzk3-2.84615681.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Princess of Wales helps prepare lunch at rural Agriturismo \u2018Al Vigneto\u2019 in Reggio Emilia\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>The Princess of Wales helps prepare lunch at rural Agriturismo \u2018Al Vigneto\u2019 in Reggio Emilia ((Phil Noble\/PA))<\/p>\n<p>Chef Ivan Lampredi, guided Kate through the process and after she finished the task told her \u201cYou are hired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said later: \u201cI have shown many people how to do this exactly right and she was very good at it. She is a natural rezdora.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been a huge honour for me to host the princess in my kitchen. I can\u2019t believe it.
