The search for the bodies of four Italian divers trapped in an underwater cave in the Maldives ended Saturday without recovering any remains \u2014 as a specialized European recovery team was dispatched to continue the operation.<\/p>\n
Five Italian scuba divers\u00a0vanished during a deep-water\u00a0dive<\/a>\u00a0inside a cave 164 feet underwater in Vaavu Atoll Thursday \u2014 in what officials called the worst diving accident in the island nation\u2019s history. Only one body, that of diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, 44,\u00a0has been recovered so far.<\/p>\n Eight Maldives Coast Guard divers searched the underwater caves Saturday but found none of the remaining bodies. Federico Gualtieri<\/p>\n Eight rescuers on Saturday from the Maldives National Defense Forces went looking for the remaining bodies inside the cave after weather halted the operation Friday.<\/p>\n But they didn\u2019t find anyone. And tragically one of those Coast Guard divers \u2014 Sergeant Major Mohamed Mahudhee<\/a> \u2014 died of suspected decompression sickness from ascending back to the surface too quickly.<\/p>\n Now, a team from Finland specialized in underwater recovery is due to arrive Sunday to take over, the lawyer for the family of one of the victims told Italian media.<\/p>\n \u201cI have received confirmation from the diving insurance company that a specialized team has been called in,\u201d Antonello Riccio, the lawyer for the family of marine biology master\u2019s\u00a0graduate Federico Gualtieri, 31, told La Presse<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe operations, weather permitting, will begin on Monday morning,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n Marine biologist Monica Montefalcone, 51, was among the divers who died, ZUMAPRESS.com<\/p>\n Her daughter Giorgia Sommacal was also part of the fatal dive Thursday. It is divided into three interconnected chambers, but recovery divers only have been able to reach the first two.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Maldivian authorities suspended the operating license of the Duke of York, the yacht that carried the five divers, while the investigation continues.<\/p>\n
