Italy’s president Sergio Mattarella will attend the men’s final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, or the\u00a0Italian Open<\/a>, at the Foro Italico in Rome on Sunday 17 May.<\/p>\n The president’s attendance takes on added significance given that Italian Jannik Sinner has reached the final -against Norway’s\u00a0Casper Ruud – amid\u00a0hopes that Mattarella will witness a home triumph.<\/p>\n The head of state\u00a0was invited to attend the final by Italian Tennis and Padel Federation president Angelo Binaghi during a recent meeting at the Quirinale Palace, and was happy to accept.<\/p>\n Return<\/p>\n It will be the second year in a row that Mattarella has attended the Rome tournament’s concluding match in person. Last year he watched\u00a0Jasmine Paolini defeat Coco Gauff<\/a>\u00a0in the women’s final.<\/p>\n Mattarella’s first visit to a final at the Foro Italico dates back to 2017, when Alexander Zverev defeated Novak Djokovic.<\/p>\n Panatta<\/p>\n The prize-giving ceremony will carry its own historic resonance.
