Freshly restored works by Andrej Wajda, Roberto Rossellini, Luis Bu\u00f1uel, Roger Corman, John Cassavetes and Ann Hui are set to screen as part of the Venice Film Festival\u2019s 19-title Venice Classics lineup.<\/p>\n
Wajda\u2019s drama about postwar political and social chaos \u201cAshes and Diamonds,\u201d which Martin Scorsese has called one of his ten favorite films; Rossellini\u2019s marriage crisis movie \u201cJourney to Italy,\u201d starring Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders (pictured above); Bu\u00f1uel\u2019s absurdist comedy \u201cIllusion Travels By Streetcar\u201d; Corman\u2019s biggest commercial success, \u201cThe Wild Angels\u201d \u2013 which launched in competition at Venice in 1966 \u2013 and Cassavetes\u2019 quirky romantic comedy \u201cMinnie and Moskowitz\u201d starring Gena Rowlands and Seymour Cassel, are among highlights of the rich program.<\/p>\n

Asian offerings include Dev Benegal\u2019s landmark first film, the scathing satire \u201cEnglish, August,\u201d and Hong Kong New Wave pioneer Ann Hui\u2019s \u201cThe Story of Woo Viet,\u201d which is one of the first political movies from Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
Italian director Daniele Vicari (\u201cDiaz Don\u2019t Clean Up This Blood\u201d) will chair the jury of film students that will award Venice Classics section prizes, both for best restored film and best documentary about cinema. Venice\u2019s best docs on cinema lineup will be announced on July 23 along with the rest of the official selection.<\/p>\n
The upcoming 83rd edition of the Venice Film Festival will run Sept. 2-12 with the festival\u2019s lineup being announced July 23.<\/p>\n
