LONDON, July 21 (Reuters) – Canada will join the next-generation fighter jet programme set up by Britain, Italy and Japan as the first “observer nation”, giving \u200bit privileged access to the project and paving the \u200cway for future participation, the partners said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Britain, Italy and Japan launched the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) in 2022 to develop a next-generation stealth fighter \u200bby 2035, led by Britain’s BAE Systems (BAES.L), opens new tab<\/a>, Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy \u200bIndustries (7011.T), opens new tab<\/a> and Italy’s Leonardo (LDOF.MI), opens new tab<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Canada will gain direct insight into GCAP, \u2060including capability development, industrial\u202fcollaboration\u202fand long-term delivery plans, the partners said. \u200bIt does not include any financial commitment.<\/p>\n

The announcement represents another step in \u200bCanada’s efforts to diversify its defence spending away from the United States and forge closer ties with European countries and mid-tier nations, as set out by \u200bPrime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n

The agreement, previously reported<\/a> by Reuters and others citing \u200bsources, was announced as Britain’s new defence secretary Wes Streeting hosted his Japanese, Italian \u200cand \u2060Canadian counterparts on his first full day in the role.<\/p>\n

“GCAP continues to strengthen our security, drive technological innovation and create highly skilled jobs across the UK,” he said in a statement.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

“We are proud to \u200bwelcome Canada to \u200bthis new phase \u2060of engagement and look forward to sharing expertise and\u202fworking on technological advances\u202fas we continue to deliver this \u200bgroundbreaking programme.”\u202f<\/p>\n

GCAP\u202f, one of two major Western sixth-generation \u200bfighter projects \u2060alongside the U.S. Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance program, aims to develop a jet designed to\u202foperate alongside the likes of the F-35.<\/p>\n

Canadian Defence \u2060Minister \u200bDavid McGuinty told Reuters in Tokyo last \u200bmonth that he had discussed GCAP<\/a> with his Japanese counterpart to learn more about what \u200bhe described as a “promising initiative.”<\/p>\n
