{"id":34578,"date":"2026-07-23T01:24:05","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T01:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/34578\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T01:24:05","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T01:24:05","slug":"new-pope-leo-xiv-medal-on-sustainability-to-debut-in-rome-in-october-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/34578\/","title":{"rendered":"New Pope Leo XIV medal on sustainability to debut in Rome in October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The pontiff will personally present the Villanova University-sponsored award at the International Sustainability Conference Oct. 12\u201315.<\/p>\n<p>A new medal named after Pope Leo XIV to recognize individuals who have worked toward ecological sustainability will be introduced in October.<\/p>\n<p>The pontiff will personally present the \u201cPope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villanova.edu\/university\/sustainability-conference.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Sustainability Conference<\/a>, to be held at the Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome from Oct. 12\u201315. The award ceremony will take place on Oct. 13 in the Borgo Laudato Si\u2019 garden, part of the Pontifical Gardens in Castel Gandolfo.<\/p>\n<p>The award and conference were established by Villanova University, a Catholic liberal arts university in Pennsylvania. This is where Leo XIV, formerly Robert Prevost, earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in mathematics in 1977 and an honorary doctorate in 2014. The Dicastery for Integral Human Development will also sponsor the event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ewtnvatican.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Pope_Leo_XIV_Sustainability_Medal_xnwvyq-scaled.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-lazyloaded=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Pope_Leo_XIV_Sustainability_Medal_xnwvyq-1024x530.jpg\" alt=\"The Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal. | Credit: Photo courtesy of Villanova University\" class=\"wp-image-18560\"  data-\/><\/a>The Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal. | Credit: Photo courtesy of Villanova University<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal is a permanent award that will be presented by the university every two years.<\/p>\n<p>An award to reflect the care for our common home<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villanova.edu\/university\/media\/press-releases\/2026\/medal.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 20 press release<\/a>, Villanova University\u2019s president, Father Peter Donohue, OSA, explained that the medal will recognize individuals who embody the university\u2019s core belief in ecological stewardship and the common good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal reflects a deeply held belief at Villanova University: that care for our common home and care for one another are inseparable,\u201d Donohue said. \u201cBy recognizing leaders whose work advances both environmental stewardship and the common good, we hope to inspire meaningful and lasting impact in communities around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ewtnvatican.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Copy-of-VATICANO-Thumbnails-12.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-lazyloaded=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Copy-of-VATICANO-Thumbnails-12-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Villanova University, where Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, studied from 1973\u20131977. | Credit: Amy Lutz\/Shutterstock\" class=\"wp-image-18561\"  data-\/><\/a>Villanova University, where Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, studied from 1973\u20131977. | Credit: Amy Lutz\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p>The conference, themed \u201cResponding to the Cries of the Earth and the Poor,\u201d will gather more than 300 academics, Church officials, and stakeholders for discussions on integral ecology.<\/p>\n<p>The recipient of the Pope Leo XIV Sustainability Medal may come from any field and will be evaluated based on his or her efforts to advance sustainability and equity.<\/p>\n<p>Another Villanova initiative to honor Leo XIV<\/p>\n<p>The medal is not the only recent initiative by Villanova University to honor its most famous alumnus.<\/p>\n<p>In early July, the university co-sponsored the 38th Annual Liberty Medal ceremony in Philadelphia, which awarded the pope the Liberty Medal ahead of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 1, the university\u2019s basketball team will open its NCAA season in Rome with a men\u2019s and women\u2019s doubleheader against the University of Notre Dame.
