Large Dog On Board service<\/a>, dedicated to transporting dogs weighing up to 30kg in the cabin without a carrier, will operate on selected national “Large Dog” flights.<\/p>\nTickets are now on sale and the service becomes operational from 3 August, bookable through ITA Airways’ Customer Information Assistance Office (CIAO) at least four days ahead of the flight.<\/p>\n
Landmark move<\/p>\n
The launch follows a demonstration flight last September from Milan Linate to Rome Fiumicino, during which two large dogs travelled in the cabin without carriers.<\/p>\n
The new service marks a landmark for Italian commercial aviation, coming after authorisation was granted by ENAC, the Italian civil aviation authority, based on its new rules governing the transport of dogs in the cabin.<\/p>\n
In this initial phase, the Large Dog On Board service will operate only on selected domestic ITA Airways flights, within the maximum number of large dogs permitted under ENAC’s authorisation.<\/p>\n
At launch, a maximum of two large dogs will be carried in the cabin, in dedicated spaces – one weighing up to 30kg in Business class, and another up to 15kg in Economy.<\/p>\n
ITA Airways chief executive and general manager, Joerg Eberhart, said the launch of Large Dog On Board marked a concrete step towards a way of travelling more attentive to passengers’ needs.<\/p>\n
He said the airline had listened to customer requests and worked alongside ENAC to allow passengers to share their journey with their four-legged companions, avoiding separations and making the flying experience calmer for the whole family.<\/p>\n
Eberhart added that the\u00a0move\u00a0confirmed the airline’s commitment to promoting innovative, responsible air travel that combines customer care, canine welfare and full compliance with safety requirements.<\/p>\n
