{"id":37076,"date":"2026-07-31T19:09:38","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T19:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/37076\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T19:09:38","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T19:09:38","slug":"italy-and-spain-clash-over-schengen-as-ceuta-migration-spat-boils-over-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/37076\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy and Spain clash over Schengen as Ceuta migration spat boils over \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spain\u2019s policy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/spain-greenlights-mass-regularization-of-more-than-500000-undocumented-migrants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legalizing migrants<\/a> has proven hugely contentious, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/spains-opposition-alberto-nunez-feijoo-accuses-pedro-sanchez-of-electoral-engineering-after-migrant-legalization-drive\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">domestically<\/a> and at a European level. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/giorgia-meloni-pedro-sanchez-clash-over-eu-migration-crackdown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meloni and S\u00e1nchez clashed over the issue<\/a> during a meeting of European leaders last month.<\/p>\n<p>Spain, which like several other European countries is fighting deadly wildfires, now also finds itself under diplomatic attack on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n<p>Manfred Weber, president of the European Parliament\u2019s largest political grouping, the center-right\u00a0European People\u2019s Party, has also called for tougher action on migration over the Ceuta crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ManfredWeber\/status\/2082845024912298126\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ManfredWeber\/status\/2082845024912298126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">writing on X<\/a>: \u201cThis proves one thing: the Migration Pact and return regulation must be enforced today, not tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>European Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner \u2014 who also hails from the EPP \u2014 said the Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/magnusbrunner\/status\/2082874953964122246\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/magnusbrunner\/status\/2082874953964122246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">has been supporting Spain<\/a> in protecting the integrity of its borders, including in Ceuta, and that he has been in touch with Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska about the matter.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson said the Commission welcomed \u201cthe close cooperation between Morocco and Spain to tackle these flows and ensure the swift return of those who have entered Ceuta illegally, in line with the applicable rules.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to our cooperation with partner countries: Morocco is a key and trusted partner of the EU,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cOver the past years, we have stepped up cooperation on migration and border management as well as anti-smuggling.
