{"id":38465,"date":"2026-08-06T18:54:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T18:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/38465\/"},"modified":"2026-08-06T18:54:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T18:54:19","slug":"rome-is-also-ours-vatican-archbishop-highlights-africas-historic-presence-at-basilica-of-st-mary-major","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/38465\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cRome is also ours\u201d: Vatican Archbishop Highlights Africa\u2019s Historic Presence at Basilica of St. Mary Major"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The basilica, therefore, stands as a witness not only to the presence of the Catholic Church in Africa but also to the efforts of African leaders to challenge the slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, that basilica has its importance as a witness to the presence of the church in black Africa and the efforts of the kings of Africa to fight the transatlantic slave trade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican official, who also serves as the representative of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic-hierarchy.org\/diocese\/dxx03.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Holy See to the United Nations and Specialized Institutions in Geneva<\/a> following his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciafrica.org\/news\/4952\/nigerian-born-apostolic-nuncio-appointed-holy-see-permanent-observer-to-un-in-geneva\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">December 2021 appointment<\/a>, said he became more familiar with Nvunda\u2019s story during his service as head of protocol at the Vatican Secretariat of State.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on his work there from 2007 to 2012, he said he sought to strengthen African representation at the Holy See.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince my time in 2007 to 2012, the number of African ambassadors to the Holy See, the resident in Rome, has more than doubled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">(Story continues below)<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Encourages Visit to Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kibeho<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Nwachukwu also encouraged participants at the SIGNIS World Congress to visit the S<a href=\"http:\/\/kibeho-sanctuary.com\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kibeho<\/a>, the Rwandan site associated with reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had hoped to visit the site during his stay in Rwanda but would be leaving early the following day for another conference.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling when he first heard about Kibeho, the Catholic Archbishop said he wondered what the Virgin Mary looked like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she like an Australian? Or was she like a Norwegian? White, blue-eyed, long, flowing golden hairs? Or was she like an African?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic-hierarchy.org\/bishop\/bkamb.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antoine Cardinal Kambanda<\/a>, Local Ordinary of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic-hierarchy.org\/diocese\/dkiga.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kigali Catholic Archdiocese<\/a>, responded by explaining how the young women associated with the Kibeho apparitions described Mary.<\/p>\n<p>According to Cardinal Kambanda, when the girls were asked whether Mary was white, black or Asian, they answered no.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they described her as possessing extraordinary beauty that brought together the beauty of different peoples.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Nwachukwu reflected on the response by noting that even within Africa, people have different complexions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMary could not just be one colour. She had to be a sum total of all of them.
