(Reuters)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a statement, the Italian government clarified that it would only reconsider its decision once it was assured there were no security or terrorism risks, no new migration wave, and no irregular migrants making their way towards European territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Spanish government, for its part, condemned Italy&#8217;s move to reintroduce checks on arrivals from Spain as &#8220;unjustified, contrary to the interests of the European Union and discriminatory against the Spanish population&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;If it fails to (remove the controls) before Sunday, August 9, Spain will be \u2060forced to adopt proportionate measures to protect the interests and dignity \u200bof \u2060its citizens,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">About 80 \u200cmigrants died as <a data-ylk=\"slk:72,000 people rushed to cross the border;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/spain-civil-guard-ceuta-jihadists-b3027827.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">72,000 people rushed to cross the border<\/a>. It added that most of them have already left the North African enclave and returned to Morocco.
