We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>The ash from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/mount-etna-flights-disruption-sicily-malta-italy-b3031772.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mount Etna\u2019s ongoing volcanic activity<\/a> has grounded air travel at Catania airport, with flight suspensions extended until early Friday after a week of widespread cancellations and diversions.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released late on Wednesday, airport operator SAC confirmed that all inward and outward flights at the Sicilian travel hub &#8211; Italy\u2019s fifth-busiest by passenger traffic &#8211; will remain halted until 2am local time on 14 August.<\/p>\n<p>Travellers have been urged to confirm the status of their journeys directly with airlines prior to heading to the terminal.<\/p>\n<p>Occurring during the peak summer holiday season, the extended shutdown impacts thousands of passengers while heaping extra strain on alternative airports across Sicily.<\/p>\n<p>Palermo Mayor Roberto Lagalla said earlier this week that the city&#8217;s airport had absorbed 190 flights originally scheduled to arrive at or depart from Catania in recent days.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/italy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2026-08-12T114231Z_585126282_RC2LVMA6T370_RTRMADP_3_ITALY-VOLCANO-ETNA.JPG\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Passengers have been left stranded following the closure of Catania airport\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Passengers have been left stranded following the closure of Catania airport (Reuters)<\/p>\n<p>Some passengers rerouted to Palermo complained of inadequate assistance with \u200conward transportation, as demand for buses and taxis surged following \u200btheir arrival. Extra traffic has also caused delays at \u200cPalermo airport, operators said.<\/p>\n<p>Comiso airport, \u2060a smaller facility south of Catania that has also \u2060been used in recent days to absorb traffic, has returned to full operations after \u200csuspending flights on \u200bTuesday evening due to ash from \u200cMount Etna, Italian news agency \u200bANSA reported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>As Europe&#8217;s highest and most active volcano, Mount Etna regularly causes operational disruptions at Catania airport, whose operator launched the sale of a stake of at least 51 per cent in May.<\/p>\n<p>Marco Viccaro, president of the Italian Volcanological Association, noted that the current activity which began on 6 August is more energetic than previous episodes and is continuing in a sustained way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This suggests that deeper, gas-rich magma is playing a more active role, making the fragmentation process more efficient and leading to increased ash production, which is severely disrupting air traffic to and from Catania airport,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>The volcanic eruption has also caused issues for other countries, including Malta. <\/p>\n<p>A statement on Malta International Airport\u2019s website dated 11 August confirmed that it was experiencing \u201cflight disruptions\u201d due to Etna. The small Mediterranean island is located 220km south of Etna.
